Evocative photographs of British landscapes function as unifying symbols of heritage and continuity, shaping cultural perceptions through historic photographs and paintings that blend personal and shared narratives. David Kendall's project, Unfinished State is situated within debates on agricultural land transformation at Britain’s urban periphery, shaped by spatial inequality and speculative development. Focusing on East England, the project examines the conversion of arable fields and heathland into sites of onshore cable installation, solar energy generation and residential expansion linked to decentralisation from cities. Through smartphone photography and thermal imaging, Kendall investigates visual spaces of food production and residential development at the edges of towns and villages, questioning the photographer’s role in constructing meaning while revealing a countryside characterised by perpetual renewal and contrasting temporal perspectives in evolving landscapes.
